Creative Thinking Skills Training: What AI Can't Do For You

AI can generate a thousand variations of an existing idea. It cannot want a new one. Large language models remix historical patterns — however fluent the output, it's interpolation, not invention. Creative thinking is the ability to connect what doesn't obviously connect, to redefine a problem instead of solving the one you were handed.

This isn't a new theme for WEF. It's the one running under everything from the 2025 skills report to the Davos 2026 stage. At this year's Annual Meeting, a session calledDefying Cognitive Atrophy asked directly whether reliance on AI dulls students' thinking, and how education systems must evolve to enhance lifelong cognitive skills. The concern isn't hypothetical anymore — it's the thing institutions are actively trying to design around.

The Forum's own framing for the year ahead put it plainly: embedding AI literacy, problem-solving and creative thinking into every education programme is vital, so graduates know how to work with and complement the value being created by AI. Complement, not compete with. That's the gap creative thinking fills — the part of the work AI was never going to be able to do for you.

As work shifts toward humans directing portfolios of AI agents, someone still has to decide what those agents are for: the purpose, the ethical boundary, the application no one's tried yet. Delegate the execution. Not the intent.
